Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace




Wat Phra Si Ratana Sasdaram, commonly known as Wat Phra Kaeo, literally temple of the Emerald Buddha, is a royal temple with in Grand Place. It was constructed by King Rama I in 1782, at the same time when Bangkok was build, and took three years to complete. Wat Phra Kaew is regarded as the oldest and most beautiful decorated. It also enshrines the Emerald Buddha which is the most venerated Buddha image in the country. This temple adjoins the Grand Palace and serves as the Royal Temple where the King performs religious ceremonies. It includes a dazzling collection of gilded spires and pavilions and mythological gods. It is what most foreigners expect to see when they come to Thailand, and it is the single most powerful image visitors take away when they leave. The compound is open to the public free on Sundays and Buddhist holidays; on other days there is an admission charge.

The Emerald Buddha sits atop a gilded altar 10 metres high. Three times a year, at the beginning of each new season, the King changes the Emerald Buddha’s robes: a golden diamond-studded tunic for the hot season, a gilded robe flecked with blue for the rainy season, and a robe of enamel-coated solid gold for the cool season. 
For walking in the courtyard areas, you must wear shoes with in the closed heels and toes-thongs aren’t permitted. As in any temple compound, shoe should be removed before entering the main chapel (bot) or sactuaries of Wat Phra Kaew. You could take photo during you have visited in Wat Phra Kaew except the Emerald Buddha inside the bot. Film and photography or movie cameras were not allowed without permission from Thailand’s government issue as it is the law of the tourism authority of Thailand (TAT).

Admission for foreigner tourist to visit at the Wat Phra Kaew and Grand Palace compound is 500 baht, and opening hours are from 8.30 to 11.30 am and 1 to 3.00 pm. The admission free includes entry to the Royal Thai Decorations & Coins Pavilion (on the same grounds) and to both Vimanmek (‘the world’s largest golden teak-wookd mansion’) and Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall, near the Dusit Zoo.
